Programme

From January 10th, the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway has a new offer designed to make the general public aware of one of the moments of the year in which the Italian-Swiss line can provide enchanting landscapes.

In fact, while waiting for the snowflakes to fall, the blue and white trains are already traveling along a low-mountain route where, favored by the wintery vegetation, the view opens up towards the peaks of Val Vigezzo and the historic hamlets nestled between Italy and Switzerland. In the year of its centenary, the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway is thus offering an unprecedented and particularly advantageous promotion: All those who purchase two tickets for the Domodossola-Locarno or Locarno-Domodossola route (valid for one or two days, with the possibility of making an intermediate stop) will pay half price.

The two terminuses, Domodossola and Locarno, deserve an in-depth visit, even on short winter days. The capital of Ossola has just renovated a new portion of its historic center, expanding the area closed to vehicular traffic: from Piazza Mercato, the beating heart of the town, with a nice walk among historic buildings and characteristic alleys, it is possible to reach the renovated and pedestrian area of Via Rosmini and from there walk on towards the UNESCO site of Sacro Monte Calvario, now connected to the ancient nucleus of Domodossola. Culture takes center stage in the splendid halls of the Civic Museums of Palazzo San Francesco and at the Rosmini College where the "Alchemical Seitzinger" exhibition is housed until February 5th.

Locarno presents itself to the traveler with a double soul: romantic, thanks to the view on the Ticino shore of Lake Maggiore, to be admired while walking along the elegant lakefront dotted with the extraordinary flowering of winter camellias, but also intimate and historic, among the alleys of the oldest heart of the town, in the spectacular Piazza Grande – one of the most beautiful in the entire Canton of Ticino – or at the Visconti Castle.
