About

The Alta Vallemaggia School of Sculpture has an important role to play in Ticino and conserves the canton’s age-old culture.

The school began almost spontaneously, as a result of the local availability of raw material for sculpting, crystalline marble in particular. The school therefore grew up in an ideal location, at the very source of its materials.

From Spring to Autumn, the village of Peccia runs various courses in sculpture, including beginners and advanced courses, a basic introduction, courses on modelling and gypsum mould making, the study and modelling of the nude figure and head, and seminars on aesthetic theory and the history of art, etc.

The courses are open to all comers. Since 1994 the school also offers the option of signing up for a professional training programme entitled “Stone sculpting and three-dimensional design” (17 weeks spread over 4 years).

Since 1997 the school has also provided 3 workshop-studios that can be hired by anybody who, attracted by this fascinating area, wants to stay for an extended period.

This year, with support from the “Friends of the School of Sculpture” the school will be opening a permanent exhibition entitled “The Route of Sculptures” in the centre of Peccia.

Future visitors will therefore be welcomed by a warm “Welcome to Peccia – the village of marble”.
