The cross-border area covered by the Project is the one around Lake Maggiore and includes, on the Piedmont shore, the provinces of Novara and Verbano Cusio Ossola, and, immediately adjacent and forming a continuum with them (known as “Alto Piemonte”), the provinces of Biella and Vercelli, on the Lombardy shore, the province of Varese, and, on the Swiss side, the Canton of Ticino. This area has a strong tourism vocation.

The Project intends to increasingly focus its efforts on attracting tourists who are attentive to sustainability. Tourists who are, above all, responsible consumers, wish to know the area well, seek authentic experiences in contact with local communities, and are careful to minimize the impact of their activities on the planet by favoring green destinations, a slow approach, the consumption of locally sourced products, holidays immersed in nature, and sustainable accommodations.

The challenge the Project intends to address, leveraging the spread of sustainable events, is precisely to make the cross-border area a sustainable destination and benefit tourists and residents. This type of tourism is strong in terms of numbers, but also attentive to preserving the ecosystem in which it is embedded and with which it forges mutually enriching relationships.

The opportunity lies in an area particularly suited to activities in close contact with nature, including cycling, trekking and hiking, and lake and river activities.
