Some of the most interesting caves in the Strona Valley are found near the hamlet of Sambughetto, including the so-called “Witches’ Cave”. This white marble cave is a favourite with cavers and has inspired many folk legends; it branches into pools and passages with stalagmites of sand, limestone concretions and streams.
During the first scientific explorations in 1869, many animal fossils were found in the cave: wolves, deer, lions, leopards, jackals and most of all the notorious cave bear. The Witches’ Cave can easily be visited by non-experts, as long as they are accompanied by a caver.
A little farther up from the Witches’ Cave is the cave known as the “Complesso dell’Intaglio”, a sub-circular gallery complex where extremely rich paleontological fossils have been found.
