On the 25th April 1986, an immense avalanche destroyed a dozen or so buildings, including the church, in Mogna, a village near Fusio. Fortunately, the houses were not inhabited at the time.
The Mogno avalanche became the subject of much discussion for its unusual destructive force. Even more discussion centred around the plans of famous Lugano architect Mario Botta, hired by the reconstruction committee to rebuild the church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. With its elliptical plan, walls in alternating layers of Peccia marble and Vallemaggia granite, and iron and glass roof, Mogno church is well worth a visit.
