The Varese Municipal Art Gallery (“Galleria D’arte Civica”) which opened in 1966 contains works purchased during the first eight editions of the Gallarate National Visual Arts Awards. Its extensive permanent collection makes it one of the most important galleries of modern art in Italy.
Today, the gallery houses over 5000 works donated by the Gallarate awards, by artists themselves and by collectors. The gallery covers paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics, animations, artists’ sketchbooks, multimedia, objects of design, engravings and screen prints. Until the 31st January 2010 the gallery will be hosting the Twister exhibition of the Network of Lombardy Contemporary Art Museums.
