The Train of the Hundred Valleys
The Vigezzo railway line began with the inhabitants of the valley's desire to have their own railway line to complete the Sempione line, the emblem of progress, ushered in by the new century.
Thus a project, which also involved the Swiss territory, with a line that connected Domodossola and Locarno, was started; as a result two committees to study the matter were formed. The official presentation of the project took place in 1905 and the work was entrusted to the Italian engineers, Candiani and Marzoli.
The Società Subalpina di Imprese Ferroviarie SSIF (The Subalpine Company of Railway Enterprises) was established in Milan in 1911. The sole purpose of this company was to create the Domodossola-Locarno railway line. The project was very difficult to carry out because of the morphology of the territory. The two sections of the line were joined in 1923, the year in which the line itself was inaugurated (on the 25th of November).
The line, which is known as the "Trenino Blu della Vigezzina" (The Blue Train of the Vigezzina), is 52 kilometers long and has a total of 83 bridges and 31 tunnels and travels through all the enchanting natural landscapes along the eastern extension of the Vigezzo Valley; here, in Swiss territory, one is struck by the colours of the artificial Lake of Camedo.
The day trip, known as the "Lago Maggiore Express", which crosses Lake Maggiore from Stresa to Locarno by ferry, and then crosses the Vigezzo Valley aboard the train of the Hundred Valleys, is worth mentioning.
