The "Sacred Rocks" of Brovello Carpugnino

On the big rocky outcrop near Graglia, there are at least one hundred cupules*. It is at least strange that all of the various visible emerging rocks are completely without petroglyphs. It can be deducted, then, that very probably the ancient inhabitants of Graglia considered only this rock as a "sacred" one. The same consideration can then be made concerning the about fifteen cupules which are all on the highest out of the six rocky complexes which are met going beyond Graglia, in the direction of Stropino, after passing the locality called La Torbiera. On this rock, in a central position, can also be seen another engraving (15x7 cm), this time, foot-shape **.

*CUPULES. There are several different interpretations of the cupule engravings. First of all, there is a sacral reading which sees in these more or less deep engravings either the place where the blood of sacrificial victims (beast or man?) was shed or the place where incense, balms or wax were deposited, possibly using them as lamps during night ceremonies. According to another theory, the boulders of the cupules were a useful system for distance signalling and communication across various heights. Yet another hypothesis interprets them as a religious symbol connected with the worship of the dead, perhaps as a kind of pietas to collect water and food for the departed. And so on, with countless different suggested meanings: constellation patterns, property signs, numerical symbols, primordial topographic representations, female sex effigies or rough fonts.

**FOOT-SHAPE ENGRAVINGS. Generally these engravings are considered as symbols of presence. When on the same rock two or more engravings are found, one is brought to think that the engravers wanted, doing so, to approach or join their own footprints to those of the ancestors. A declaration of existence then, but also the desire to be connected to the past. Anyway, it is also possible that the foot-shape petroglyph could simply indicate the possession of a certain territory. According to other theories these engraving could be those of the spouse, engraved during the nuptials, or a rough system of road signalling.
