Nature's authentic display a short distance from Cannobio: smooth projecting rock faces, deep and green waters and rock spurs that seem to sternly watch over the placid stream of water, which runs silently through the whole gully.
Over thousands of years, the waters of the Connobio Torrent relentlessly gouged out the gorge (that reaches 25m in depth) in the rock. Sailing up the gorge, navigating in the silence broken only by the impetus of the torrent and crossing ancestral ravines, lit up only at intervals by the rays of the sun that succeed in filtering down here, one plunges totally into the charm and the impressive beauty of this places.
Above, two bridges span the gorge, the narrower and more ancient one (called "dell'agostana") and the other, which is used by motor vehicles.
The name of the gorge comes from the sanctuary, which was built in 1638 by people of local origin, who lived in Rome. The spiral black-marble columns of the main altar are very beautiful and the paintings dedicated to the life of Sant'Anna are priceless; the frescoed chapel dedicated to the Madonna di Loreto, is also outstanding. The chapel, which antedates the church and which is perhaps very ancient, is the actual apse of the church.
