Oggebbio

The Municipality of Oggebbio distinguishes itself for various original reasons.
Firstly, there is no town of Oggebbio, the name refers to fifteen small villages, which are scattered partly on the lake shore and partly on the plateau halfway up the hillside of the mountain: Barbé, Resega, Rancone, Cadessino (where there is the fifteenth century Oratory of the Birth of Mary, a national monument), Mozzola, Quarcino, Gonte (chief town of the municipal area where there is the parish church of San Pietro with a bell tower that is 42 m high), Piazza (that has a number of nineteenth century villas set among vegetable gardens and vineyards), Dumera, Pieggio, Spasolo (that was the lake port), Cadevecchio, Camogno (known above all for the traditional "Feast of the Mice"), Novaglio (renowned for the springs and the Romanesque Church of Sant'Agata) and Travallino.

Another original feature of the Municipality of Oggebbio is the close tie between the lake and the contiguous mountain, a relationship that was strengthened in tourism's name.
In fact, until a few decades ago, the elegant villas and the beautiful gardens that looked onto the gentle shores of the lake seemed to contrast the numerous mountain pastures that overlooked the villages; naturally the people who lived on the mountain were mainly involved in rural and agricultural activities.
Today, the natural tourist calling of the shore has prevailed over the productive aspect, which for centuries characterized the life of the mountain: whilst preserving their traditional rural appearance, these buildings, (where once, during summer the families of Oggebbio took their cattle to pasture, to make cheese and to grow potatoes) have transformed themselves into gracious places to spend a beautiful holiday.

Hiking enthusiasts can today make use of the numerous trails and old mule tracks that were made to connect the pastures and the villages; this well-constructed system of trails makes it possible to cross the woods and to admire the remains of the infinite series of terraces that were built to cultivate vines, rye and grain.

The micro-climate (a common feature of the medium-high shore of Lake Maggiore) is one of the original features of Oggebbio. This climate provides the fundamental condition for the abundant flowering of camellia, the symbol and pride of these people: during the fifties in Oggebbio people again began to cultivate this splendid flower. This was due to the loving commitment of Antonio Sevesi to whom the incomparable collection of over 200 varieties (and another 300 obtained from seeds), cultivated in the garden of Villa Anelli is owed.
The flowerings in autumn that are very rare in Europe and above all the presence of the Kamakura Shibori variety, the only one able to resist the winter snowfalls, are also noteworthy.
