Eighth edition of the exhibition dedicated to the queen of winter, the winter camellia, the flower that blooms in what is traditionally considered a poor season for flowers, and which by doing so, brings splendour to Lake Maggiore’s gardens. From1st to 2nd December 2007, in the wonderful setting of 19th Century Villa Giulia, just a stone’s throw away from the lake, you can see the exhibition of numerous varieties of this flower and partake in a rich calendar of events scheduled for the occasion.
In addition to visiting the private collections of camellias in the gardens of prestigious villas such as Villa San Remigio, Villa Anelli (in Oggebbio) or in the Medini gardens (visits can only be made via prior booking on +39 0323 503249), it will also be possible to purchase particular camellia varieties or books dedicated to them at the sales point inside Villa Giulia. There will also be opportunities to try some delicious teas made from camellia.
As is the case every year, the camellia display will be accompanied by other events, this year dedicated to film with the photographic display “Italian Cinema Divas” (36 portraits) created by the Turin National Cinema Museum to mark “The Oscar Night” in L.A. As well as unforgettable faces from the 40s and 50s there will also be some present days stars: Sofia Loren and Francesca Muti to name but two. These icons of beauty will also the inspiration muses for a flower arranging competition with camellias, organised by the Typical Lake Maggiore Flower Association with florists from Verbania, Novara, Biella and the FioriSci Association of Turin.
One event not to be missed is the presentation of a new variety of winter blooming camellia obtained by hybrid expert Mario Carmine, renowned camellia expert from Cannero Riviera. This camellia, named Princess Grace, is dedicated to the unforgettable diva Grace Kelly, to mark her 25th Anniversary, and has a double corolla and a cottony petal, with soft pink to white tones
