About

This itinerary is part of the Via Verde Varesina (the Varese Greenway), created in 1984 by the Province of Varese with assistance from the Germignaga, Laveno Mombello, Luino and Varese branches of the Italian Alpine Club and the National Alpine Association of Luino.

The stretch from Maccagno to Luino offers a series of views of Lake Maggiore, and is easy to follow thanks to the yellow metal markers put up by members of the Luino branch of the Italian Alpine Club.

Difficulty: easy
Route: Maccagno – Motti dei Ronchetti – Torretta – Ronchi – Colmegna – Bonga – Luino
Distance: 7.5 km

Leave Maccagno railway station and walk to the bridge over the River Giona. From here the trail goes up the hill of the Motti dei Ronchetti, from where there is a sheer drop to the lake (view). The path then goes down to Torretta (follow the signs) and proceeds to Ronchi and Colmegna. After this there is an uphill stretch to Bonga, from where there is a view of the lake shore opposite Stresa. You then go over two little hills (views) and proceed downhill through a group of houses. This brings you to the hillside area of Luino and then the centre of the town.
