Snow
Snow aplenty and everywhere. The Lake Maggiore basin becomes a real skiing Mecca during the winter. Downhill skiing, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, snow shoes: activities which have been widely practised throughout this territory for years.
Downhill skiing (and recently snowboarding) shares its popularity with winter tourist resorts, (already famous at the beginning of the century), and with the Macugnaga range which clings to Monte Rosa. This area is also the centre of the sporting evolution of the champion Massimiliano Blardone, from Vco (Pallanzeno).
From the lake basin at 200 metres above sea level, to the 4,000 metres plus of Monte Rosa, it is obvious that skiing feels at home, and not only downhill. Cross-country, for example is widely practised and popular. Riale, in upper Val Formazza, has for several years been host to national teams throughout Europe which come to prepare for the racing season.
One thing is for sure " alpine skiing or snow shoe trekking don't take second place, thanks to a vast variety of possibilities on offer.
