Ground
From mountain biking to road cycling, from horse-riding to golf: there are numerous sporting and leisure activities available to those who wish to have fun on solid ground without forfeiting the lake.
Thanks to the mountains and valleys that surround Lake Maggiore, the choice is endless for road cyclist who love to climb (the Toce falls were, for example, one of the arrival stages at the very selective 2003 Giro d'Italia.
But there is also plenty for off-road cyclists: the paths which can be covered by mountain bike are vast and not only uphill, considering the growth in downhill in recent years.
And if you prefer the saddle, there are various offers for horse-riding lovers: stables at Santa Maria Maggiore, in Val Vigezzo, and also in Domodossola (G.E.A. Centre La Prateria), where you can leave for an exciting two-day horse ride.
Then, from horse-riding to golf, Lake Maggiore is the land of "a green with a view": in Stresa there are two golf courses. One historic nine hole course dating back to 1924 and an 18 hole course from which, on a clear day, you can see Milan's highest buildings and an amazing four lakes. Then there is the Piandisole course, on higher ground, with the backdrop of Monte Rosa, about 15 kilometres from Verbania. More recently constructed is the Fondotoce plains course.
