Point of interestPassion Play, Good Friday

Romagnano Sesia

The Good Friday Passion Play presents the drama of the Passion of Christ, which has inspired poets and artists through the ages. It takes place in the streets and squares of Romagnano Sesia, temporarily transforming the ancient burgh into another Jerusalem.

The local residents keep up the tradition inherited from their forebears by acting the parts of over three hundred characters in the play. The originality of the itinerant performance and the involvement of the spectators in the dramatic action have given this play a unique character that makes it one of the best known and most significant examples of a passion play in Italy.

Faith, tradition and folklore combine to give this ancient tradition a peculiarly spontaneous feel, while retaining its solemn and harmonious character. As in the medieval Mystery Plays, the people as a whole become at the same time actors and spectators.
