The Oratory of San Martino di Breclema in Romagnano Sesia is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Novara area, and one of the finest examples of medieval art.

Dating from the 11th century, when it was part of the fortified village of Breclema, the oratory is built of river stones and some re-used Roman bricks. The square plan bell tower appears to have been built from the structure of an earlier tower. In the interior, on the wall above the altar, there is a fine painting of the Virgin Mary with St Hilary.

Recent archaeological excavations have revealed some interesting finds, confirming the historic character of the place.

Documents exist which relate that during the wars and plagues afflicting Romagnano in the 12th century, the church of San Martino was used as a lazaretto.

The Oratory of San Martino di Breclema is a major place of historical interest in medieval Romagnano Sesia; with the simplicity of its architecture and its rural location, it communicates an agreeable feeling of peace.
