Borgomanero

Oratory of San Leonardo

The Oratory of San Leonardo in the town of Borgomanero is one of the major examples of religious art in the Novara area.

The medieval village of Borgomanero was actually originally called Burgus sancti leonardi or St Leonard’s burgh; the name referred to this Romanesque oratory, still in an excellent state of conservation.

The single-nave structure with semicircular apse has large shaped stones on the gabled façade and the buttresses, while the side walls and the apse are built with river stones mostly arranged irregularly.

The interior contains some very fine frescoes in Romanesque style, dating from the 13th century and still much studied today.

The Oratory of San Leonardo stands in the centre of Borgomanero, near Corso Roma.

How to get there

By car: from the A26 exit at Borgomanero. When you get to the centre, look for Via Don Minzoni.
