Point of interestMonterosso

Verbania

Monterosso

Monterosso is a thickly wooded, rounded hill (694 m) behind the town of Verbania on the Borromean Gulf, not far from the shore of the lake.

The hill has great environmental value due to its trees and animal life; the dense natural tree cover, mostly deciduous species like chestnut, oak and ash, has encouraged the gradual repopulation in the area of animals such as badgers and roe deer.
Monterosso has a number of interesting historical features. There are numerous glacial erratics, carried here by prehistoric glacial ice. Then, the large number of archaeological finds, including some rock engravings, testify to the fact that human beings lived here at least 3,000 years ago. More recent evidence of human settlement is provided by the terracing created using dry stone walls, and by the drainage channels scattered over the hill.

Lastly, there are characteristic rustic cottages with their traditional architecture, and cobbled paths, especially in the village of Cavandone, of medieval origin.

An important feature of the area is the presence of many pretty oratories and votive chapels, testifying to the piety of the past inhabitants; a good example is the church of Our Lady of Good Remedy, on the road to Cavandone, from where there is a superb view of Lake Maggiore.

There are some agriturismi (organic farm restaurant/guesthouses) on the top of Monterosso.

How to get there

By car: from the A26 take the exit for Verbania. On the road between Fondotoce and Intra, take the road on the left leading to Cavandone. Verbania is 37 km from Malpensa Airport.
By train: the nearest railway station is Verbania-Pallanza.
