About

The second highest massif in the Alps, Monte Rosa (4,634 m) is perhaps the most beautiful and spectacular mountain in the Verbano Cusio Ossola.

It’s commonly thought that Monte Rosa owes its name to the colour of the peak at sunrise and sunset (“rosa” means “pink” in Italian), but the name actually derives from the word roise, which means glacier in the ancient local patois.

Its variety of rock faces, gullies, crevasses and glaciers make Monte Rosa a favourite with climbers and skiers.
Winter sports lovers are well catered for with excellent facilities, pride of place going to the runs on Monte Moro (3,000 m), including 37 km of ski mountaineering trails and areas dedicated to free-style snowboarding.

Summer climbing enthusiasts can tackle the routes to the Margherita hut, at 4,559 m perched close to the summit of the highest peak of Monte Rosa, the Punta Gnifetti, and Cima Jazzi (3,803 m), reached starting from Pecetto in Macugnaga.

Even if you aren’t a climber, you can reach the glacier and see Monte Rosa at close quarters by taking the Belvedere Chairlift which leaves from Pecetto.
