Point of interestRemains of the Castle of Maggiate Superiore

Gattico

The remains of a medieval castle can be seen in Maggiate Superiore, a little village near Gattico.  No documents exist to give details of when it was built, nor who its noble proprietor was.

The only information we have recounts that the castle was destroyed once in 1311 by the Ghibellines, and again in 1358 by Galeazzo II Visconti, to prevent it falling into the hands of his enemy the Marquis of Monferrato.

The traces of the ancient “castrum” that can still be seen suggest that the building was a large one. The most significant of the remains include a 12 metre high square plan tower, and a miniature of the castle in the building at the side. At the top is a 15th century terracotta window frame.

How to get there

By car: from the A26 exit at Arona and follow the signs for Borgomanero.
By train: the nearest railway station is Gattico.
