Point of interestCavenago Castle

Ghemme

Cavenago Castle stands on a vine-covered hill in a dominant position above its village. In the 16th and 17th centuries it came to be used as the villa of a country farming estate, and is a silent witness to the ancient struggle between Guelphs and Ghibellines, and the territorial disputes that for centuries ravaged this fertile, prosperous countryside.

The fortified building of Cavenago has kept its rectangular structure over the centuries, with its three corner towers; its severity is softened by an elegant portico with columns and a roof-terrace above the façade. The central keep, used as a farm-yard, retains an ancient 60 metre deep well.

A small private oratory, built inside the north tower in the 17th century, is dedicated to Santa Rosa of Lima.
Another, older castle once stood in the hills near Ghemme; of this castle, the “Castello della Motta”, nothing remains but a few ruins.

How to get there

By car: from A26 motorway, exit in Romagnano Sesia. Malpensa Airport: 41 Km far from Ghemme.
