Point of interestThe farm hamlets of Ameno

Ameno

The farm hamlets of Ameno

The picturesque country area of the Cascine di Ameno - the farm hamlets of Ameno lies at the edge of the valley of the River Agogna, above Lake Orta.

The farm hamlets are an area of country hamlets, some of them on the river bank, others tucked away in the thick woodland of an unspoiled natural environment, ancient stone buildings and broad verdant meadows used as pastureland. Time seems to have stood still in the villages of Pezzasco, Tacchino, Sculera, Milanetto, Tabarino, Lanciano, Barozzera, Cassano, Pecorino; the landscape too seems untouched, and the many excellently kept paths and mule-tracks are perfect for long hikes or mountain bike excursions through the pristine woods.

Many historical figures have visited the area. Near the farm hamlet of Barozzera, beside the oratory of the Santissimo Nome di Maria (the Most Holy Name of Mary), is the house where Antonio Rosmini and Alessandro Manzoni spent vacation periods to study in delightful solitude. Opposite the oratory of St Anthony Abbot in Cassano is the house where Giulio Pecora, the Franciscan patriarch of Constantinople, was born on 24 June 1727. Lastly, the façade of the oratory of Sant’Eurosia in Sculera displays a tablet recalling the generosity of King Vittorio Emanuele II in providing funds for the reconstruction of the village after it had been completely destroyed by a terrible fire.

The Cascine di Ameno area is a magical place, full of history and rich in nature, perfect for anyone wanting to relive the atmosphere of times past.

How to get there

By car: from the A26 exit at Arona and continue in the direction of Invorio/Gozzano, following the signs for Mottarone. When you reach Ameno you will see the indications for the Cascine area in the valley at the back of the village, along the River Agogna. Malpensa Airport is 41 km from Ameno.
By train: the nearest railway station is Orta-Miasino.
