Campiglia and Roccolo

Campiglia and Roccolo are two important places of historical and natural interest in the High Vergante area to the south-west of Lake Maggiore.

Campiglia is an ancient medieval village of narrow lanes. In the past it was called “Frazione Torre” (the tower village) because of its lookout tower, which controlled the southern part of Lake Maggiore. Today, all that remains of this tower is a trace inside a newer building, while all round the site a nucleus of stone houses and farm buildings has grown up, turning the ancient settlement into a farming village.

If you face away from Lake Maggiore you will see a pretty little hill, the Roccolo, in an area of mature woodland with a fine lawn and a turret-house. This place was once used to catch birds with a system of fixed nets well hidden among the trees.  Apparently Queen Margherita, who was a keen ornithologist, used to come up to the Roccolo when staying in Stresa to see the species of birds kept here.

How to get there

By car: from the A26 exit at Meina or Carpugnino. Take the road for Massino Visconti, then look out for the sign for Campiglia and Roccolo at the opposite edges of the same road.
By train: the nearest station is Meina.
