Point of interestCollegio Rosmini

Stresa

Collegio Rosmini

The Collegio Rosmini stands in the village of Ronco, on the hillside above Stresa, in a situation with a beautiful view over the Borromean Gulf and the surrounding mountains.

Founded in 1835 through the benevolence of Anna Maria Bolongaro, who gave her splendid house to the philosopher Antonio Rosmini, it was used initially as a novitiate centre, later becoming what is today a Catholic Reception Centre for religious studies, culture and training.

Next to the College is the Church of the Santissimo Crocefisso (Holy Crucifix), a visit to which is a must for devotees of the priest-philosopher Antonio Rosmini. His remains are conserved in the crypt, under the watchful gaze of statues of the Saints who lived on Lake Maggiore. A side chapel contains his memorial, by the Swiss sculptor Vincenzo Vela. Opposite it is the tomb of the Rosminian poet-priest Clemente Rebora.

On Via Manzoni, the road running from the College to the centre of Stresa, there is a fine monument (1932) by the sculptor Pietro Canonica, recalling the meetings Rosmini had in Stresa with the great writer Alessandro Manzoni.

How to get there

By car: from the A26 motorway exit at Carpugnino. Continuing towards Stresa you will see the Collegio on your right.
By train: the nearest station is Stresa, on the Milan-Domodossola line.
