Point of interestBosco Tenso

Premosello-Chiovenda

Bosco Tenso

Bosco Tenso (the Tenso Wood) is a wooded area of 22 hectares on the left bank of the River Toce near the town of Premosello-Chiovenda.

The area is of great environmental interest, and has been designated an environmental oasis by the WWF.

Since the 16th century it has been exploited by the local people as a source of firewood and a protective barrier against flooding by the river.

Bosco Tenso is an ideal spot for all kinds of excursions. The nature trails winding through the area are signposted, and a series of information panels help visitors appreciate the points of interest along the route. Guided visits with a WWF guide are available with prior booking.

The Bosco Tenso flora comprises mostly mature specimens of oak, hornbeam, ash, lime, and sessile oak, and bushes of spindle, hawthorn, honeysuckle and elder. The fauna includes many species of birds: heron, blackbird, little ringed plover, buzzard, green woodpecker and great spotted woodpecker. Sometimes animals can be glimpsed among the trees: foxes, hares, badgers, squirrels and roe deer.

Bosco Tenso also possesses a hide constructed out of reeds from where you can watch the animal species of the oasis.

How to get there

By car: from the SS33 towards Domodossola exit at Premosello. From the centre of the village a road leads to the wood (less than 1 km).
By train: the nearest railway station is Domodossola, 17 km away.
