NewsTempo di Migrar 2009 in Premia

Tempo di Migrar 2009 in Premia

For the fifth consecutive year the Premia Council and Pro Loco are promoting the event Tempo di migrar - time to migrate to mark the descent back to town of over 3,000 sheep accompanied by their shepherds as they leave their summer Alpine pastures to return to lower ground. So, on Saturday 26th September visitors can admire the spectacular ritual of transhumance and celebrate in order to pay homage to this ancient practise which has been taking place for centuries unchanged.

Over the years Tempo di migrar, which takes its name from the well known lyrical opera by Dannunzio I Pastori, has become the traditional end of summer event thanks to the uniqueness of the scenario that the flock offers as it passes through the streets of the town in the night time.

On Saturday 26th at 3pm, the sheep will arrive in the village of Cadarese where, at 4pm, there will be displays of wool elaboration, combing and carding, sheep shearing, stands offering food and drink tasting and the opportunity to buy goat's cheese and salami. Fun is guaranteed for children with lambs feeding time and entertainment by the Villadossola Rescue Volunteers who will provide the public with drawings, tricks and games. From 7.30pm visitors, tourists and residents can dine in the town's restaurants on strictly sheep and goat based menus (complete menu on the internet site www.comune.premia.vb.it) while they wait for the flocks to reach Premia at around midnight. Arrival in Crodo is scheduled for 3am.
